EXPERIENCE

Oakleaf Waste Management (2004 to 2007)

Oakleaf Waste Management is a $600 million private equity owned waste outsourcing / logistics services firm providing turnkey solutions to Fortune 500 companies in designing, contracting and managing their waste and recycling programs. After experiencing stagnant results and increased client turnover, I was recruited by the majority investor to refocus leadership, reorganize and develop operations leading to improved company performance.

Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President

Responsibilities:

As a member of the senior executive team, responsible for the day to day management of Oakleaf’s core waste logistics and outsourcing business and the performance of its three wholly owned subsidiaries.

Accomplishments:

·        Within sixty days of joining the Company and through a collaborative effort of board members, senior and middle management, led a strategic review of the Company and its operations resulting in an agreed upon plan toward refocusing operations and driving top and bottom line results.

·        Successfully reorganized the sales function instituting a focus on consultative versus “price only” selling. Redefined the sales approach, productivity tracking, sales incentives and target markets leading to record organic revenue growth. During my tenure, annual revenue (excluding acquisitions) increased from $178 to $400 million.

·        Act as the lead senior executive in managing high profile client relationships. Directly responsible for closing General Electric, Sears Holdings, CVS Pharmacy, among others.

·        Directed a branding study that led to repositioning of OAKLEAF in the marketplace by identifying the Company’s core competitive strengths. Directed the development of a new marketing strategy and creative; successfully repositioning the Company as a leading waste outsourcing and logistics firm.

·        Directed company wide operational analysis and process mapping, leading to a realignment of resources, improved functional ownership, accountability, operational efficiencies and enhanced client focused inter-departmental communication and cooperation.

·        Realigned the account management function leading to improved client interaction and relationship management resulting in significant improvements in client retention, cross selling of services and expansion of revenue.

·        Successfully integrated three acquisitions focusing on communication, assimilating management teams, driving efficiencies through operational synergies and leveraging the client base to cross sell acquired product lines.

·        During my three year tenure, Company EBITDA increased 225%.

·        Sale of Company during August, 2007 led to a 66% internal rate of return to its private equity investor.

Nightingale & Associates, LLC (2002 to 2004)

Founded in 1975, Nightingale & Associates is a financial and business advisory firm providing crisis management and turnaround services to leading financial institutions, investors, law firms, private and public companies worldwide.

Managing Director

Responsibilities:

Acting in an interim management or consulting role, perform analysis and develop immediate and near term tactics to initially stabilize and then return companies to operating health. Responsibilities include complex debt and equity restructuring, financial, strategic and operational analysis, bankruptcy evaluation as well as implementation of operating tactics. Industry assignments include heavy equipment manufacturing, plastic injection molding, wholesale apparel, business services, franchising / retail and wireless communications.

Accomplishments:

·        While representing a bank syndicate, worked with a multi-billion dollar Fortune 1000  manufacturing company in performing operational analysis,  restructuring its debt and confirming a repayment strategy though the orderly sale of operating divisions.

·        Reviewed recovery plan for $200 million failed “roll up” in the direct marketing industry working with private equity and banks in negotiating a restructuring of the Company’s debt and equity structure.

JobDirect, Inc. (1997 - 2001)

JobDirect was a Venture Capital owned application service provider (ASP) that delivered software tools and other services to “Fortune 1000” companies who desired to enhance their business processes in recruiting recent college graduates and interns for employment. After assuming the role of CEO, I guided the growth and structure of this organization through the expansion segment of its lifecycle, ultimately leading to a sale of the company at a significant market premium for shareholders.

                                                                                                     

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Responsibilities:

·        Provided guidance to the Board of Directors concerning long-range strategic and annual operating plans, profitability and other pertinent business issues.

·        Developed strategic / marketing plans and financial analysis used in communicating the Company’s vision and market opportunity to the Wall Street and Venture Capital community.

·        Directly negotiated all material business agreements.

·        Responsible for instituting a consultative sales program targeting the “Fortune 3000” on a nationwide basis. Managed high profile client relationships.

·        Oversaw marketing programs that leveraged online and traditional media, direct marketing and tradeshows as well as “grass roots” programs used in building brand awareness.

Accomplishments:

·        Successfully raised approximately $7.5 million in capital through the “Angel” and Venture Capital community including Canaan Partners and Scripps Ventures.

·        Grew the organization from twelve to over 100 employees, structuring sales, marketing, human resource and software development functions.

·        Achieved market leadership in candidate registration within our market segment.

·        Developed multiple sales channels that resulted in revenue growth of 250% per year over two years, achieving a number two-share position in our market segment.

·        Recommended to the Board of Directors strategic alternatives that resulted in the sale of the Company to Korn/Ferry International. Spearheaded interaction with investment bankers including the identification of potential partners, negotiation of terms and closing of the transaction.

·        Total return to shareholders who invested during my tenure was approximately 300%.

Hometown Bancorporation, Inc. / The Bank ofDarien

During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, a period in banking considered to be the most significant downturn since the great depression when almost one third of Connecticut’s banks failed, I assumed the challenge as CEO of developing and implementing a turnaround plan for this troubled publicly traded financial institution.

President and Chief Executive Officer (1990 – 1996)

Responsibilities:

·        Provided guidance to the Board of Directors concerning long-range strategic and annual operating plans, profitability and other pertinent business issues.

·        Responsible for managing all high profile customer relationships. Cultivated new business through direct calls and on site support of sales personnel.

·        Oversaw marketing programs that included continuous research used to refine the Bank’s market positioning, new product development, promotional and advertising campaigns, public relations and image development.

·        Acted as a direct liaison to the financial community.

Accomplishments:

·        Reversed losses from a record ($1.95) per share in 1990 or to record profitability of $.75 per share.

·        Stock price of the Company increased 39% on a compound annual basis from a low of $2.50 per share to a high of $17.75 per share.

·        Increased bank assets 146% from $93 million to $229 million.

·        Reduced overhead from 32% in excess to 12% below industry average.

·        Successfully defined the Bank’s market positioning which resulted in the attraction of an upscale clientele with over 82% of the Bank’s customers falling into the most affluent market segment.

·        Attained a 97% overall customer satisfaction rating resulting from the successful implementation of company wide quality programs.

·        Engineered the successful acquisition of a failed institution.

·        Recommended to the Board of Directors strategic alternatives that ultimately resulted in the sale of the institution. Spearheaded the search for strategic partners, negotiation of pricing and finalizing terms and conditions of a definitive agreement. Final price paid was a 45% premium to market.

·        Named as one of the 40 top bankers under 40 years of age by the American Banker.

Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer (1986 – 1990)

Responsibilities:

·        Directed the formation of Hometown Bancorporation, Inc. and the registration and underwriting process in successfully raising capital through an initial public offering of common stock.

·        Responsible for all financial, accounting, cash management and financial / regulatory reporting functions including investment strategy and making decisions, tax planning, budgeting, monitoring of cash flow, management of interest rate risk, pricing of financial instruments, insurance and risk management, shareholder relations, financial reporting including annual and quarterly reports and SEC reporting including 10K and 10Q filings.
